State Tournament Results Prediction

1. Curtis
2. Bellevue
3. Mercer Island
4. Puyallup
5. Roosevelt
6. Kentridge
7. Gig Harbor
8. Auburn Mountainview

Another season is almost over and the regionals provided some interesting results.  Newport one of the top teams in the state failed to make the final with an upset by Gig Harbor.  Gig Harbor finished second in the West, but was the only team for the west to make it with an upset over Newport.

Roosevelt put together a good showing missing two of their top athletes in the Gordon brothers.  Roosevelt had won the Kingco conference going undefeated in league play, and they made adjustments and put together the wins to get the 3rd seed from Region 1.

Region 2 went as expected based on inter-league play results.  Curtis and Puyallup finishing 1-2 and then the two top teams from the East league, Kentridge and Auburn Mountainview - finishing 3-4.

There will be some great games this week, ultimately culminating in a championship game between defending champion Bellevue and undefeated Curtis.  It should be a great game, although based on Curtis’ performance in the previous two match ups – the last coming at Curtis, we predict Curtis has too much for Bellevue to overcome.  A perfect season is in order.

Two other interesting games should be what we predict a Mercer Island and Puyallup game for the 3rd.  Which we think MI will win. Puyallup falls a little short, but finishes a great 2015 campaign.

The other game is the semis between MI and Curtis.

I am sure MI has plans for upsetting Curtis in the semis.  That would be one of the biggest upsets in Washington water polo history – but, hey, this is high school sports.  Anything can happen.  Mercer Island has steadily improved throughout the season.  They have a good goalie.  Who knows.  We predict Curtis to blow open a close first half and win by 8 goals.

Curtis, Bellevue and Mercer Island appear to be at least a rung above the rest.

Good luck to all at the Washington State Water Polo Championships!

Rankings

  2. Bellevue ^
  3. Mercer Island
  4. Roosevelt
  5. Puyallup
  6. Shorewood
  7. Newport
  8. Bainbridge Island
  9. Gig Harbor
  10. Kentridge

Looks like Curtis is still #1 and it doesn't appear they will be challenged.  Is a perfect season in order for Curtis?

Congrats to Roosevelt for essentially locking up the North league championship with a win over MI and Bellevue last week.  However Bellevue moves over Roosevelt to #2 with a victory over Roosevelt at the Curtis tournament.  The all-deep pool seems to favor Bellevue.  Mercer Island suffered two losses to Bellevue in the last week.  Roosevelt also lost to MI at the Curtis Tournament pushing them down to #4.  These North teams seem to be neck and neck.  We will see who is tops come playoff time.

The remaining rankings are the same as favored teams continue to win.

Games to watch -

Shorewood vs  Newport for the final North League playoff spot.
Bainbridge at Gig Harbor with the West League title on the line.  Tuesday, October 20th.

  1. Curtis
  2. Roosevelt
  3. Bellevue
  4. Mercer Island ^
  5. Puyallup ^
  6. Shorewood
  7. Newport
  8. Bainbridge Island ^
  9. Gig Harbor
  10. Kentridge

Curtis remains on top with a 10-7 victory over Mercer Island at MI.  This is the closest contest of the season for Curtis.  Are teams catching up or is it just tougher to travel?  Curtis won’t have to worry about that at the Regional and State tournaments.

Puyallup solidified their position as one of the top teams with a second tournament championship this year by winning the Emerald Ridge tournament over Gig Harbor.

Kentridge remains in the top 10 as the top team in the East, but a tough ER tournament suggests there may be some vulnerabilities.

Games to watch this week –

1 vs 2 in the South - Curtis at Puyallup, Monday, 10/5

Kentridge at Auburn Mountainview, Wednesday, 10/7

Roosevelt at Mercer Island, Thursday, 10/8
Bainbridge at Stadium, Thursday

  4. Mercer Island
  5. Puyallup
  6. Shorewood ^
  7. Newport
  8. Bainbridge Island
  9. Kentridge ^
  10. Gig Harbor ^
A couple of new entries in the top 10.  Kentridge comes in at number 9.  Kentridge probably should have been in the top 10 last week based on their victory over Auburn Mountainview.  Gig Harbor replaces Auburn Mountainview and depending on the outcome of their game against Bainbridge Island this Tuesday, they could move up in the rankings.  The Tide would hold sole possession of first place in the West Conference.

Shorewood moved above Newport in the rankings due to a close victory at Newport.  Shorewood beat Newport 11-10.  This contest currently gives Shorewood the 4th seed in the North Conference.  It will be painful to see one of these teams miss out on the Regional playoff by finishing 5th in the conference.

Bellevue moved up over Mercer Island with their 12-8 victory over Mercer Island at the Islander’s home venue.  The top 3 in the North all look competitive.   It seems anyone of them could end up with the number 2 ranking.

Curtis had a convincing victory over Bellevue this week, 12-7.  Hey Bellevue, losing 12-7 to Curtis IS a victory.  This may be the only single digit margin of victory this season for Curtis.  Good job Bellevue.

Curtis holds the number one spot with an impressive Tournament Championship in Oregon.  The best of the Northwest is probably in Washington.  That will be confirmed this week when Lakeridge (Curtis' opponent in the championship game) goes against the only challenger left for Lakeridge in Oregon - Newberg.  Check out Maxpreps to see who wins - or drive down to Lake Oswego to watch the game.

The Auburn School District tournament gave us some early idea of other powers.  Puyallup won the tournament and strengthens its position at #5.  Not sure yet how they would do against the top 4 at this point, but Bellevue's 21-10 victory over Shorewood at Shorewood gives a slight edge to Bellevue.  It would be nice to see a Puyallup vs (MI,Roosevelt or Bellevue) game.

Roosevelt clearly established their position at number 2 with victories on the road against MI and Bellevue.  Maybe they should be number 1 !?!

This week has some interesting games as MI plays Bellevue for the first time this season and the Newport / Shorewood ranking will be determined as those two go head to head.  Newport / Shorewood could be critical in determining who goes to regionals for the North.

Other games that should give us additional insight are Bainbridge Island vs Peninsula and Gig Harbor vs Stadium!!

Preseason poll

Sorry for the delay in posting the results, but we won't post a preseason poll unless we have at least double digit responses.  It would be best to get responses from each area/league, so the results are not unfairly weighted.

Hey - this is for fun.  Preseason is preseason.  It means nothing.

If you have any athletes in your area that you want to give a shout send them in. Pics and profiles will be posted.  We expect coaches to know the most about their athletes, so no harm in bragging about your best.  It would be good to hear from referees in this area as well!
